Ephesians 6 Armor of God - Roman Soldier or High Priest?
The funny thing is the bible was written by Jewish people so why do believers today say this passage in Ephesians is pictured after a roman soldier? Wouldn't the image of a Roman soldier, who followed pagan gods, oppressed the people of Israel and killed those who opposed the rule of Caesar, be a disturbing picture?
I think so.
Most believers say Paul wrote about a common sight, a Roman soldier. However, would it really be proper to compare believers armor to the pagan, sun-god worshiping Romans? I don’t think so.
Look at what the High Priest wore in Exodus 28:4...
“…a breastplate, and a shoulder garment, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a turban, and a girdle.”
Now Yeshua is our High Priest so what do we see in the scriptures?
“For He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation upon His head; and He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.” Isaiah 59:17
“Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, and faithfulness the belt of His waist.” Isaiah 11:5
Now some believers say "But what about the sword? There is no sword" Actually the high priest did have a sword that was used in the sacrifices. Scriptures also show that the word of God is a two edged sword...
"For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12
Others point out that the priest ministered in bare feet but Paul says your feet should be fitted preparation of the gospel of peace ref. Ephesians 6:15.
The shield is not the Roman shield, but the shield of faith. Throughout the scriptures our Father is called a Shield...
Deuteronomy 33:29 "Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord, The shield of your help And the sword of your majesty! Your enemies shall submit to you, And you shall tread down their high places.”
Psalm 18:35 "You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great."
Proverbs 30:5 "Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him."
So instead of looking at the scriptures in a Roman, Greek or Western mindset, perhaps we should look at it in the eyes of those who wrote it.
