Jesus is NOT the Messiah! John Hagee's false teachings

Jesus is NOT the Messiah! John Hagee's false teachings

For those that follow the bible (hear and do), here are my thoughts on John Hagee, a TV preacher and author (anyone can be an author so don't let that impress you). And recently I have noticed a lot of people following this guy, buying his books and promoting him as a man of God. Even those who are Messianic support Hagee because he ‘supports Israel’ so much. I have run into many who quote Hagee more than the scriptures, so is that a problem? We'll are there problems with this guy? Lets see.

You see John Hagee has said in print and in many interviews that Jesus did not come to earth to be the Messiah. Yea I was stunned to but I decided to do some checking. First let us see how the word ‘Messiah’ and ‘Christ’ are defined in the bible.

The word “Christ” in the Greek its strong’s G5547 Christos meaning the anointed one, the Messiah, the Son of God; this definition is seen 569 times in the New Testament. In the Hebrew, H4899 its ‘Mashiyach’ which means ‘anointed one’, ‘Messiah’. Ok so now that’s clear lets look at Hagee and what he says.

Quotes from John Hagee’s book “In Defense of Israel”

1. Page 137 “If God intended for Jesus to be the Messiah of Israel, why didn’t he authorize Jesus to use supernatural signs to prove he was God’s Messiah, just as Moses had done?”

Note: I guess turning water into wine, feeding the multitudes, healing the sick, making the blind see and raising the dead and all the other miracles are not supernatural? If that is not authorization I don’t know what is? Especially since Yeshua stated that He did not come with His own authority or words but said and did what the Father told Him to do.

2. Page 138 “Jesus refused to produce a sign… because it was not the Father’s will, nor his, to be Messiah.”

Note: Seriously? Read the above note on all the miracles Yeshua did – so many miracles and sign that scripture even states there would not be enough books to contain them all as seen in this scripture…

“And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.” John 21:25

Hagee’s claims goes against the scriptures in so many ways its not even funny. Consider John 1:40-42 where Simon the son of Jonah was called Cephas by Yeshua. In verse 41 Andrew said to his brother "We have found the Messiah" and that Yeshua never corrected him or any disciple for calling Him the Messiah. Matter of fact we can find NO scripture where Yeshua said He was not the Messiah!

3. Page 139 “If Jesus wanted to be Messiah, why did he repeatedly tell his disciples and followers to ‘tell no one’ about his supernatural accomplishments?”

Note: This is a strawman argument – Hagee is equating that just because Yeshua said ‘tell no one’ it must mean He is not the Messiah (even though He did many times in scripture prove He is the Messiah). Its obvious that Yeshua knew His works would speak for themselves and did not need a man-made marketing plan to get the Father’s message out.

4. Page 140 “The Jews were not rejecting Jesus as Messiah; it was Jesus who was refusing to be the Messiah to the Jews.”

Note: This heresy and here is why - read John 4:25-26 “The woman said to Him, I know that the Messiah is coming, the One who is called Christ: when He comes, he will tell us all things. Jesus said to her, I that speak to you am He.” Yeshua is directly stating He IS the Messiah! Notice that Yeshua NEVER rebuked or corrected this woman, but He agreed with Her. So much for refusing to be the Messiah! Also read Matthew 16:16-17, Mark 13:6, Luke 2:26-32, John 6:69 & John 10:22-30. Scripture states in Him (Yeshua) there was not sin. In otherwords Yeshua never sinned and was never wrong. However if you follow Hagee's claims you must conclude Yeshua was wrong – its so far out there its not even funny. It’s hard to believe anyone still follows this guy. Many support him because he supports Israel and forget to test everything else he teaches.

5. Page 141 “The wanted him to be their Messiah, but he flatly refused.” Page 143 “He refused to be their Messiah, choosing instead to be the Savior of the world.” Page 145 “Jesus rejected to the last detail the role of Messiah in word or deed.”

Note: Jesus flatly refused & rejected to be the Messiah? That Yeshua chose to be Savior and not Messiah? Again another strawman argument and hoping that most will not see than Yeshua can be both Savior and Messiah at the same time. Just like He can be a priest and king. Scripture states He said what the Father told Him to say and do, and He fulfilled the prophesies as Him being the Messiah. Hagee ignores many important scriptures such as Matthew 26:62-64...

"Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the CHRIST (the MESSIAH), the Son of God.”

“Yes, IT IS AS YOU SAY,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Now there are hundreds of prophesies that Yeshua fulfilled as the Messiah yet Hagee denies them all (ref. Messiah ben Joseph and Messiah ben David).

Consider what scriptures say about those who deny Yeshua/Jesus is the Christ/Messiah...

"Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also." 1 John 2:22-23

Also read Matt 10:33, 26:69, Luke 12:9, etc. I don’t know about you but I would not want to be John Hagee on judgment day believing and teaching this heresy. Yet many still follow Hagee because of his other books, especially his book on the Blood Moons. So you can deny that Yeshua is the Messiah and thats ok as if his book on the blood moons makes up for it? Seriously?

Now if you think this was an isolated incident I'm going to show you some quotes over time showing this is not a one-time mistake by Hagee.

In an interview in the late 80’ss Hagee is quoted as saying “I’m not trying to convert the Jewish people to the Christian faith… In fact, trying to convert Jews is a waste of time. Everyone else, whether Buddhist or Baha’I, needs to believe in Jesus. But not Jews. Jews already have a covenant with God that has never been replaced by Christianity."

Seriously? What Hagee is saying is that there are two covenants - one for the Jews and another for everyone else, yet Jeremiah 31:31-34 states the only one covenant that is renewed (Romans 11 states that gentile believers are grafted into Israel) - where God's torah (His instructions on how to love Him and our neighbors) is written on your hearts and minds. That covenant consists of both Jews and gentile believers that will one day be one flock, where all of mankind will worship Him. Notice there are NO prophesies stating what Hagee is presenting and we know that God reveals nothing unless its revealed in the prophets found in scripture ref. Amos 3:7 "Surely the Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets."

However if you discount the writings of the prophets and numerous scriptures like Hagee does, then you can do anything you want, even if it is against scripture.

Still think this is an isolated incident?

Consider Hagee’s interview with two BBC reporters in 2002… Reporter 1: And conversion before the coming of the Messiah is not on your agenda? Hagee: If a Jewish person asks me about what it requires to be a Christian, I’m delighted to tell them. BUT I do not target Jewish people for salvation.” Page 19 of JHMagazine Special Edition Summer 2002.

Still not convinced? Here is more...

The Houston Chronicle reported: “John Hagee, fundamentalist pastor from San Antonio and friend of Israel, is truly a strange fish. ... The man has a mission. He’s out to attack anti-Semitism. He also believes that Jews can come to God without going through Jesus Christ.”  The Houston newspaper then quoted Hagee’s own shocking words: “I’m not trying to convert the Jewish people to the Christian faith.”

Funny how Hagee says to Jews, Jesus is NOT the Messiah but to Christians Jesus IS the Messiah. Well what about the scripture where Yeshua stated “NO ONE can come to the Father except through me?” ref. John 14:6. What about 1 John 2:22-27 that states “who is a liar but he that denies that Jesus is the Christ (Messiah as was defined earlier)?” Yea Hagee has some big problems.

Now Hagee says a lot of things in print, video and audio that directly contradicts with scripture. His own statement of belief where he says he believes in the 'absolute authority of the scripture' but in his teachings he contradicts his own statement of faith by coming to conclusions, which reject the scriptures authority! The other problem is when Hagee is confronted he then claims that Jesus did come as the Messiah; yet he continues to say that opposite and make money off the books and appearances where he claims Jesus is not the Messiah. Yea its that bad - this guy is really confused to put it nicely but it gets worse. Lets look at some background on this guy.

In light of this strange dual covenant theology and his denying that Yeshua/Jesus is the Messiah on any level, which is against scripture, we also see that Hagee has had other problems where he refuses to follow the scriptures. Matter of fact he even flatly disobeyed scriptures in order to satisfy his fleshly desires. You see John Hagee was the pastor/leader of the charismatic San Antonio mega-church Trinity Church in the 1970s and fathered two children with his first wife, Martha Downing. In 1975, at the age of 35, Hagee was involved in a scandal in which he admitted in a letter to his congregation that he had been guilty of "immorality” (coveting, adultery/cheating on his wife). He subsequently divorced his wife (BTW God hates divorce) of 15 years and, one year later on April 12, 1976, married 24-year old Diana Castro his current wife (who was 9 years younger). To make it worse Diana Castro was a member of Hagee’s congregation at the time of his admission!

So here was Hagee who was THE pastor of a church, who willfully chose to covet, commit adultery, sin against God, his wife, kids and neighbors, then married a member of the congregation! That is pretty bad for a 'man of God' who is supposed to shepherd the flock and protect them from sin. Its no wonder we continue to see false teaching from this man.

Talk about protecting the flock, what if your pastor invited an unbeliever to speak at your church? Hagee did, he had Glenn Beck speak at his church. In case you didn’t know Beck is died in the wool Mormon! Hagee has also had many other false teachers on his TV show and programs. Again God’s word states we are not supposed to allow false teachers to speak to the flock but guard against them, to correct and rebuke them yet Hagee does neither. Why? Because birds of a feather flock together!

Another problem with Hagee is his focus on the prosperity message and misuse of scripture to compel people to tithe and give money to his ‘church’ (2 Cor 9:7). Consider Pastor Hagee when he has his congregation members raise their money towards the sky and repeat after him “Give and it shall be given.” He then instructs his audience “When you give, it qualifies you to receive God’s abundance. If God gives to you before you give to him, God himself will become a liar… If you’re not prospering it’s because you’re not GIVING!”

Funny but when we read the scriptures it states that our giving is NOT to be done in front of others but in secret as seen here…

“Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from you Father in heaven. Therefore when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues (churches) and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.” Matthew 6:1-4

We also do NOT see any examples in scripture where abundance and blessing is gained via giving money to the ‘church’. Rather we see promises of God blessing His people because they OBEY his words, His commandments, statutes and principles (i.e. those who live a righteous life).

There is much more wrong with John Hagee but I think you get the point. Just because he supports Israel does not mean he is squeaky clean in everything. His theology sucks and its far from correct.

In closing, I hope this post highlights the importance of testing EVERYTHING. Either you follow God, the Messiah and His word or not.

Shalom

Stephen
