Some believers today say "But Jesus didn't do Passover..."
My reply: Well Yeshua/Jesus called it the Passover (we'll get to that a little later).
Consider the words of Paul when talking to the gentile church in Corinth (the Matthew Henry commentary states "Paul, by the blessing of God on his labours, planted and raised a Christian church, chiefly among the Gentiles")...
"For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
1 Corinthians 11:23-25
The breaking of the bread depicts the Passover meal. The cup He took after the supper was the third cup of the Passover meal - the cup of Redemption. The only change that Yeshua/Jesus made was to change who we were to remember.
The Jews and foreigners (the mixed multitude) that came out of Egypt to the time of Yeshua remembered what God did through Moses. Now Yeshua tells us to remember Him. God through Moses delivered the people from physical slavery. Yeshua delivers us from the spiritual slavery of sin. BTW never did Yeshua tells anyone to shorten the Passover to just bread and wine.
Also notice Paul did not say anywhere that Passover was replaced by communion which is just a wafer and small cup of wine. Paul also talked about the Feast of Unleavened Bread in 1 Cor 5:6-8...
"... Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."
Notice Paul did NOT say to replace the feast of unleavened bread by not having malice or wickedness in our heart. He said "Therefore let us KEEP the feast..."
What Paul was addressing and telling believers that they should keep the Passover feast AND have no malice or wickedness as they observed it!
Some say Yeshua/Jesus did not observe Passover is disproved by the very words of the Messiah in Matthew 26:18-19...
"And He (Yeshua/Jesus) said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand; I will keep the PASSOVER at your house with My disciples.”’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the PASSOVER.
Also read Mark 14:12-16, Luke 22:11-15.
We also see Paul referring a feast in Acts 18:20-21 - BTW the majority of bible scholars agree he is talking about the feast of Passover.
Something to think about.
